A lighthouse keeper and his wife living off the coast of Western Australia raise a baby they rescue from a drifting rowing boat.
Emotionally scarred from the exposure to the horrors of WWI, traumatized veteran Tom Sherbourne lands a job as a lighthouse keeper at remote Janus Island in Western Australia. But there, instead of self-punishment, withdrawn Tom finds Isabel: a headstrong and sparky young woman offering companionship, love, and the prospect of a new family and a brighter future. Then, as the hoped-for baby never arrives, a rowboat carrying a baby girl washes ashore, answering Isabel’s prayers. Is this, indeed, divine intervention? Torn between duty and grief, Tom’s only choice is to yield to Isabel’s heartbreaking plea to keep and raise the baby as their own. However, a chance encounter with an enigmatic woman on the mainland can only spell trouble, highlighting man’s flawed perfection and the rippling impact of his actions.
